|Description=The various IMAGE 3.0 modules for the socio-economic system and the earth system, as described in the previous chapters, are closely coupled and linked via multiple feedback mechanisms, and, thus, form the ‘core model’ of IMAGE 3.0. As a result, a suite of additional impact modules was developed and linked with the IMAGE core model through a static exchange of data. In other words, these impact modules can be invoked if and when desired to address specific fields of interest, and they have proven very helpful to explore interactions between very different issues of sustainable development.

This chapter presents an overview of the indicators that may be assessed using the IMAGE model. Specific impact modules are presented in subsequent dedicated sections. Below, all indicators that originate from the modules in the core model are briefly described

In this chapter we present an overview on the indicators that can be assessed with the IMAGE model. While specific impact modules are presented in dedicated sub chapters further below, all indicators that originate from the modules in the core model are briefly described here
The impact indicators derived from the core model span a very wide range; examples often reported in assessment studies include:
• Energy supplied, traded, converted and consumed (Section 4.1)
• Production of agricultural, animal and forestry products  (Section 4.2.1)
• Forest cover, managed and unmanaged (Section 4.2.2)
• Land use and land cover (Section 4.2.3)
• Livestock numbers and feed, fodder and grass intake (Section 4.2.4)
• Emission of greenhouse gases and air pollutants (Section 5)
• Biomass and carbon stocks and flows (Section 6.1.1)
• Potential and actual crop yields and grazing intensities (Section 6.2)
• Renewable water availability, irrigation and water stress (Section 6. 3)
• Nutrient balances and their fate in soils and surface waters (Section 6.4)
• Atmospheric concentration and radiative forcing of greenhouse gases and other forcing agents (Section 6.5)
• Global average temperature; temperature and precipitation changes per grid cell; sea level rise (Section 6.5)
 
The following sections describe the additional impact modules available in the IMAGE 3.0 framework: Terrestrial and Aquatic Biodiversity; Flood Risks; Soil Degradation; Ecosystem Goods and Services; and Human Development.
